Be
Quiet!
Speaking
of hearing protectors, are you a person with sensitive ears? Or do you have to practice in a very loud
room? For a different experience, try practicing with foam ear plugs or some other type of hearing
protection.
What
about quiet for the rest of the family? The truth is that our ocarinas are
intentionally designed to produce their best tone when played with good strong
blowing pressurethe way you would play when performing in public. Still, I
often play my ocarina very softly if
my children have just gone to bed or if I am sitting right next to family
members while they work on something. This can be a good way to practice tough
passages over and over without promoting insanity or alcoholism among your
household. (When my brothers and I were particularly noisy, my mother used to
claim that we kids were going to "drive her to drink," so I know that this is a
real danger.)
